Andropause - Male Menopause

What is Andropause?

Most people are familiar with menopause in women caused by oestrogen deficiency. It is a natural occurance with age and can be the cause of many sweaty sleepless nights and hot flushes. Did you know that men can go through a similar phase of life starting as early as their 40s? It can be called male menopause, andropause or testosterone deficiency. Approximately 2% of men over 40 and and 12% of men over 50 can be affected by testosterone deficiency. It is under-diagnosed and under-treated meanwhile the statistics rise with age.

Symptoms to look out for..

Andropause can affect men in many different ways and is very often overlooked. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain Fog
  • Night Sweats / Sleep Disturbance
  • Loss of muscle mass and strength or inability to improve muscle mass
  • Loss of Height
  • Loss of Libido
  • Reduced Strength in Erections
  • Mood Swings / Depression

Unfortunately there is a higher incidence of andropause amongst men who are overweight, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, benign prostate enlargement, asthma/COPD or type 2 diabetes. Certain medications can also increase the risk of eg. long term opiate painkillers, anti-epileptic or anti-psychotic medications. Hair loss medications like finasteride and dutasteride can also reduce testosterone levels.
