Botox® for Gummy Smiles

Creating a Beautiful Smile with Balanced Proportions

A great smile doesn’t just end with straight white teeth, all of the surrounding elements help to create a beautiful smile.

Gummy Smile is present when some people smile and their upper lip elevates to far above their upper teeth, exposing gums and producing an unattractive smile. An ideal smile will only have up to 2 millimeters of gum showing with the upper lip sitting just above the top teeth.

This happens due to several causes. The most common cause is hyperactivity of the muscles which elevates the upper lip. Occasionally, the gummy smile is also aggravated by a thin upper lip that further contributes to the problem by exposing the upper gum even more.
In the past gummy smiles were treated with invasive surgeries of the gum tissue and jawbone. Thankfully, developments in cosmetic medicine allows us to treat the appearance of gummy smiles with a simple, non-invasive 10-minute treatment that is so simple, yet so effective.

So, a gummy smile can be simply and effectively corrected by Botulinum toxin (well known as Botox®) injections to reduce the activity of the muscle that elevates the upper lip.

The Treatment

A small amount of Botox® is injected at both sides of the junction of nostril and the nose to mouth fold (levator labii muscle). This is a very safe and virtually painless procedure that can be undertaken in around 10 minutes, and patients can return to normal activity immediately. Within the next 2 weeks the treatment will gradually take effect reducing the elevation of the upper lip thus creating a more balanced smile.

Side Effects

Injection related side effects are minimal and temporary such as redness, swelling, bruising. Spreading of the Botulinum toxin to the muscle nearby that can cause temporally relaxation can be easily prevented by avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for approximately 4 hours post treatment.

How Long Will the Results Last?

The results last 3-4 months. The longevity of the result is variable and each individual may obtain a different result. A treatment plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result will be provided for you in advance.
