Brow or Eye Lid Ptosis

Alleviate symptoms of droopy eyelids

Brow ptosis or sagging brow is usually a result of the ageing changes that affect the forehead muscles and the surrounding soft tissue. At the FACEmed clinic in Essex we can discuss treatments that can help if you have this problem.

Sometimes brow ptosis is present along with other problems, such as eyelid ptosis or hanging upper eyelid skin.

Acquired ptosis is common, and occurs usually due to the muscles that elevate the eyelid becoming weak, thin, or stretched with age.
Droopy eyelids often interfere with vision and can lead to: fatigue from straining to elevate the eyelids; impairment of visual fields in the relaxed, non-compensated state; poor eyelid function, discomfort; headache worsening towards end of day and/or evidence of chronic compensation through elevation of the brow.

Brow Ptosis or Lid Ptosis does not correct itself over time

For a temporary result a chemical lift with Botulinum Toxin Type A (info on this page is for medical aesthetic treatments rather than medical treatments however the principles all apply) might be appropriate.

The non-surgical approach requires no recovery time and the risks are minimal and the aim of the treatment is to restore appearance and function.

Sometimes the non-surgical brow lift might be considered in combination with other nonsurgical approaches, such as chemical peels or dermal fillers which can also be placed under the eyebrow to provide a subtle lift of the brow. Choosing from these procedures and deciding whether they might be used together depends on the severity of the condition.

The disadvantage of eyebrow lifts with Botox® is that the result is temporary (3-4 months) and the lift is minimal but in many cases the improvement is adequate and easily maintained with a regular treatment plan.

Botox ® and Dysport® are approved for treating both cervical dystonia and glabellar lines, and Botox® is also approved to treat strabismus and blepharospasm. The only way to permanently fix a severe case of ptosis is with surgery.

In the end, the decision over whether a patient will have a chemical or surgical brow-lift comes down to what is right for that individual.

How does the Chemical Brow Lift work?

Botulinum neurotoxin type A has been shown to have a dose-dependent effect influenced by injection technique and the size of the muscle. Accurate injections of small volumes of properly concentrated solution is essential to target specific muscles. In the forehead there are muscles that elevate the brow and others that pull it down or depress it. A skilled Botox® injector can carefully inject just the muscles that pull down, enabling the brows to lift. This will also give the eyes a more open look. Most people can expect up to 2 millimeters of lift, which sounds like a little but for many patients this may be all they require to avoid the need for a surgical procedure. Remember that the effects of Botox® last approximately 3 to 4 months; if you seek anything longer than that a surgical procedure such as endoscopic brow lift and/or blepharoplasty might be necessary.
