Understanding Invisalign

Invisalign is clear aligners used for orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth. It is also widely used to correct various dental issues like crowding, misalignment and over or under bite issues. Invisalign is custom designed to fit your teeth and gums, moving them little by little into place. A great feature of Invisalign is that they are nearly invisible, so you can feel confident throughout the treatment, not worrying about the appearance of thick prominent braces which Invisalign is a great alternative for.

The Benefits

They are clear, so practically invisible and are made using a transparent, medical-grade plastic material. They are virtually invisible when worn on the teeth, making them a discreet option for those who want to avoid the noticeable appearance of traditional braces. They are custom designed and made specifically for you. The ‘little-by-little’ movement; move the teeth incrementally, gradually bringing them into their desired positions.

Invisalign is comfortable too. Traditional braces can cause some discomfort due to the wires and brackets, but Invisalign have smooth edges and no sharp components making them pleasant and easy to wear. As mentioned above; Invisalign is versatile. They can address a wide range of orthodontic issues, including overcrowded teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and more.

It is therefore not just about a straight smile; it can really help in many ways. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is a removable aligner allowing for easier oral hygiene maintenance. Patients can still brush and floss their teeth normally, as well as clean the aligners themselves. Below, we explore what the process and procedure involves.

Initial Assessment

A consultation is the first step where we assess your current teeth and any problems. The dentist may take x-rays, scans and dental impressions of your teeth to give them a true reflection. These will then be used to create your own personalised treatment plan.

Customer Designing of the Aligners

The dentist will use the research gathered at your initial assessment and custom design your aligners, which will be specific for you. Your dentist will fit your first set of aligners and you will receive all the information you need for how and when to change each aligner set; in line with your treatment plan.

This is usually every 1 to 2 weeks but please refer to your own personalised plan. To maximise your aligners, we recommend you wear them every day for approximately 22 hours per day, removing only at mealtimes.

In-Treatment Process

As part of your treatment plan, you will attend the clinic for a checkup every 6 to 8 weeks. This is to assess and review the process of the aligners.
