Plantar Fasciitis is a degenerative condition causing inflammation of the plantar fascia, the ligament that runs along the bottom of the heel. It typically presents as pain that occurs after rising from bed, which may improve after a few minutes but can return with walking or standing.
The condition is often triggered by an injury to the heel, which may seem minor. Pain and deterioration can be exacerbated by hard-heeled shoes, and in cases where both heels are affected, it may be linked to inflammatory arthritis. The plantar fascia becomes thicker and less elastic, leading to micro-tears and inflammation.
Treatment usually involves stretching exercises for the foot and leg muscles, ice application, and special insoles. Lifestyle changes, including weight loss, may also be recommended. Additional treatments may include steroid injections, night splints, and in rare cases, surgery to release the ligament. While the condition can resolve on its own within 18 months, treatment can expedite recovery.
