There are many research papers that suggest that there are links between sugar and heart disease, diabetes and even cancer! Within dentistry, sugar is still one of the main causes of dental diseases such as decay and this is a widespread issue which needs to be tackled. More Men Died in 2017 from Prostate Cancer than Women from Breast Cancer

Prostate cancer has been a hot topic in the press recently, not least because for the first time more men died in 2017 from prostate cancer than women from breast cancer. The screening programme and improved treatment for breast cancer has made significant improvements in diagnosis and in survival rates and we should celebrate that: the topic is discussed openly and many people are familiar with pink ribbons and breast cancer charities. So why is it so different with prostate cancer : many people do not even get the name of the problem right, calling it prostrate cancer! Growing a moustache in “Movember” is becoming more popular but even those who join in cannot name a prostate cancer charity. And of course a man’s prostate gland, situated as it is in his bottom, and examined via the rectum, is not such good dinner time conversation!

When a disease or illness starts in our body, we may not be aware of it until it starts to cause symptoms. But if you don’t have symptoms how do you know there is something awry with your health? This is where screening becomes important. It involves the use of medical tests to pick up the presence or indicator of a disease, before you have symptoms. If you can pick up illness at this pre-symptomatic stage, then the disease burden or risk is small it can be mitigated or treated.
