What is it?

Plantar Fasciitis is a degenerative condition that causes inflammation of the ligament in the heel. It tends to start with patients complaining of pain after rising from bed. The pain improves after 5-10 minutes but can return after periods of walking and/or standing.

What causes it?

Injury to the heel, which may be innocuous, is often the cause of plantar fasciitis. The pain and progressive deterioration is aggravated by shoes with harder heels and in some cases where both heels are affected it can be associated with inflammatory arthritis. The plantar fascia ligament becomes thicker and less stretched leading to micro tears and thickening with inflammation.

What is the treatment?

Treatment should focus on stretching tight foot and leg muscles along with ice relief and special insoles. Some lifestyle changes may be recommended along with weight loss. Add on treatments include steroid injections, night splints and in rare cases surgery can be undertaken to release the ligament. The condition can resolve naturally in 18 months, but treatment speeds up the process.
