Many patients are wanting to improve the look of their smiles and there are a range of treatments that we offer at FACEMED that can help with this. From teeth whitening to veneers, or straightening your teeth to composite bonding, there are many treatments to choose from.
It can be confusing to know which dental treatment will be best for your specific concerns, however, If you are wanting a perfect looking smile and don’t want to commit too much time to achieving this, composite bonding could be what you are looking for.
What is composite bonding?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment that can give you a perfect looking smile. It can be used to fix minor damage on the teeth such as filling in chips and gaps. It can also be used to whiten the look of discoloured teeth and gives natural looking results, since the composite resin is matched to your existing teeth’s colour.
A composite resin is used which is moulded and smoothed until it sits perfectly amongst your other teeth. The resin is cured to make it hard and made to bond to the tooth surface, then the composite bonding is polished to give you a dazzling new smile.
After composite bonding you will have a lovely new smile and there won’t be any imperfections in the areas where the composite bonding has been placed.
Will I need any other treatment?
To get the most out of composite bonding it is best that patients have straight, white teeth to begin with. If your teeth are not already straight or are a bit yellowed, we can provide teeth straightening with Invisalign for example, and professional teeth whitening before you undertake the composite bonding procedure.
How long does composite bonding take?
This will depend on how many teeth are being treated, but on average each tooth will take between 30 minutes and an hour to complete. In most cases you can have the full procedure in one appointment and it is a relatively quick and pain free treatment that yields beautiful looking results.
How to care for composite bonding
You will be able to start eating and drinking a few hours after your treatment, but after having composite bonding you will need to stay away from foods and drinks that can stain your new teeth, such as coffee, teas and red wine for at least 48 hours. You will also need to stay away from tobacco products as these can also stain the teeth.
It is important to make sure you look after your composite bonding long term, in the same way you would look after your teeth. Brushing twice a day and flossing daily is imperative to keeping your composite bonding looking in the best condition.
You should also avoid biting your nails or biting down on excessively hard food as this could damage the bonding.
How long does composite bonding last?
With good dental hygiene and by looking after their teeth most patient’s composite bonding will look great for an average of four to five years; but many patients do get longer results from this treatment.
Eventually the shine will wear off, so you will want to have the procedure done again when this happens. Composite bonding is therefore a longer term commitment, but most patients agree that it is worth it to have such a nice looking smile.
